imagine1day COMPLETES THE CONSTRUCTION OF ITS THIRD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ETHIOPIA

The last brick has been laid for the Harnet Elementary School built by imagine1day, a Canadian charity created by lululemon athletica founders Chip and Shannon Wilson

February 17, 2009

VANCOUVER - imagine1day is thrilled to announce the completion of the Harnet Elementary School in Ethiopia. Harnet is the third school built by this young, vibrant charity in just one year working on the ground in Ethiopia. When imagine1day first met the community of Harnet, students attended classes sitting on rocks under a tree in the hot sun. With the completion of the Harnet Elementary School enrolment has increased from 98 students to 199 students and there is a total school capacity for 400 students. For the first time, the children in the Harnet community will learn beyond grade two. The door to education, opportunity and a bright future has been opened.

The Harnet Elementary School project does not only consist of a school building. imagine1day constructed toilets and a new water well. imagine1day donors invested in school furniture, sports equipment, books and various types of teacher training for the Harnet community. 2,000 fruit and shade trees were planted and a school garden with a micro-irrigation system is being implemented to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the school. Before construction could even begin eight kilometers of road had to be built. The new road allowed materials to be brought into the community for the school construction and going forward will provide increased access to health care, commerce and transportation.

"The Harnet community welcomed us with open arms and we have already begun to see positive results with student enrolment doubling since the completion of the new school," says imagine1day Executive Director Sapna Dayal. "An important component is constructing a separate toilet for girls providing privacy which is essential for maturing girls and will increase their school attendance. So much more than cement and bricks, this school has become the heart of this committed community. With a new source of water and income generation schemes in place, the community of Harnet is poised to maintain their school for years to come."

In 2009 imagine1day will build two more elementary schools and provide clean water to nine schools in Ethiopia. imagine1day's goal is to provide quality primary education to all children in Ethiopia by 2020. It is estimated that over 200,000 classrooms need to be built to provide access for the over three million children in Ethiopia that are currently out of school and to put a roof over the heads of children currently studying under trees.

IMAGINING POSSIBILITY FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Charity's new web function allows donors to build their own world of giving

December 10, 2008

VANCOUVER - On the eve of its first anniversary, Vancouver-based educational charity imagine1day has launched a unique function on its website, allowing donors to create their own online shopping page for their favourite project - just in time for the holidays. Donors can select the items they want to contribute - from desks to writing supplies to roofing materials - and invite their loved ones to support their fund-raising goals. A connection begins the moment a gift is made and imagine1day strives to deepen that connection through stories, photos and videos that inform the gift-giver and recipient about the impact of their investment.

Launched on December 11, 2007, with an endowment from entrepreneurs Chip and Shannon Wilson, imagine1day builds elementary schools for children in 30 communities across Ethiopia, with 100 per cent of directed online donations going to in-country projects. The organization is working in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education to increase school facilities, teaching standards and enrolment levels.

In just one year, imagine1day has built two full community schools, with a third slated for completion in January 2009. imagine1day also provides school supplies and furniture, curriculum enhancement initiatives and teacher training, and leads community initiatives designed to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the schools. Twenty-four additional elementary schools have received classroom furniture, teacher training, sports equipment, science kits, books and trees.

"Watching the joy in children as they take their seats in a newly built classroom or the pride they have when they water a young tree seedling is what motivates all of us at imagine1day to find creative ways to connect people to the work we are carrying out every day on the ground in Ethiopia," says imagine1day Executive Director Sapna Dayal. "We're thrilled at the progress that's been made thus far and we're very excited to bring donors one step closer to the experience using our online shopping tool, which allows them to see their part in the big picture."
