MOBILIZING - PLANTING - MAINTAINING

project at a glance:

This low cost investment provided 11 existing schools in the Hintalo Wejirat district of Northern Ethiopia with the building blocks for a self sustaining future. Your investment impacted 4,418 children, their families and their communities for years to come.

Minimum Investment - $63.51 (one set of tools)
Maximum Investment - $16,843.05 (fully funded project)

goals:

photo_mobilizing-001.jpgThe members of the Parent Teacher Association in 11 primary schools were mobilized and trained in leadership, financial management, ecology, gender equality, project sustainability and income generation.

Parents and teachers in eight primary schools planted a total of 16,000 fruit and shade trees and were oriented in environmental conservation and alternative income sources.

Ten sets of hand and gardening tools were provided to eight primary schools to repair wear and tear of the school building and surrounding area and to improve the overall learning environment.

how dollars were spent:

PTA training

Three qualified leaders trained five members of each Parent Teacher Association over a five day period. Each participant received a training and implementation guidelines manual.

tree planting

Community leaders participated in a three day workshop on environmental protection and conservation. Students and parents were trained in preparing the soil for planting and irrigation and in water erosion control techniques. Two thousand fruit and shade seedlings and trees were planted.

life skill tools

Each tool kit includes one small axe and shovel, one medium axe and shovel, one spade, one water bucket, one hammer, one water barrel, one pair of scissors, and other small gardening and hand tools.

the need:

photo_mobilzing-005.jpgAlthough access to schools in these 11 communities is not an issue, the existing facilities lack the resources and training necessary to ensure a quality education for the students that are enrolled. Furthermore, improvements to the standard of education and enhancements in the level of community participation will encourage parents who have not yet enrolled their children in school, to do so. In December 2007 imagine1day provided these 11 schools with new desks, tables, chairs and shelving units. imagine1day will continue to work with these 11 schools throughout 2008, 2009 and 2010. Planned activities include formation of school clubs, provision of sports materials and science kits, creation of classroom reading corners, development of a creative writing curriculum, and various types of teacher training.

implementation:

Start Date: April 1, 2008
Completion Date: July 31, 2008
