With little more than sticks and stones, the village of Gerambero has gone to great efforts to provide a place for their children to receive an education. Still, their inspiring structure falls short of qualifying as a school where children can learn in a safe, comfortable setting. The lack of clean drinking water leaves children dehydrated and the absence of a safe, private latrine deters parents from sending girls to school. imagine1day is proud to work with the dedicated community of Gerambero to build a new Grade 1-4 primary school which will accommodate 400 children and become the heart and future for this community’s 2,000 inhabitants.

Latrines offer privacy and hygiene for children to go to the bathroom. For many families a private latrine is the key factor in sending their girls to school. The education of girls contributes to higher economic productivity, lower infant mortality and fertility rates, and the attainment of longer life expectancy for women. They say…when you educate a girl you educate her whole family. During 2010 our goal is to construct five latrines which will serve over two thousand children each year. As part of our program we will also work closely with the communities’ Women’s Associations and Gender Equity School Clubs to encourage dialogue about menstruation in an effort to curtail drop outs that this stage of life often causes. imagine1day is proud to partner with Lunapads in providing each community with 10 Pads4Girls kits which will facilitate this conversation.

The remote community of Weste holds all of the history and wonder that comes to mind when one imagines the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Kingdom of Ethiopia. Tucked deeply away in the mountainside, the name Weste literally means ‘hidden’. Just above the plot stands the current open air “dass” school that the community constructed on its own two years ago. While a noble effort with such limited resources, the structure falls desperately short of being conducive to quality learning. The side by side grade one and two classes are made from local stone, branches and straw. Together, we will replace Weste’s Grade 1-2 dass school with a Grade 1-4, fully furnished four room concrete and stone school complete with girls and boys latrines, clean water, fruit tree planting and sports equipment. Further training for Weste’s teachers will also be provided to strengthen gender equality and a student centered approach to teaching. The school will serve 400 school age children per year with the school day will be split into two sessions to ensure a classroom size of no more than 50 children.
The Laelay Weste Community School Project will be possible as a result of the joint efforts and generosity of five groups based in Vancouver's lower mainland, who are pouring countless hours of creative energy and hard work into reaching their fundraising goals.
