For some children in rural Ethiopia, the opportunity to attend school ends after the fourth grade. The long distance and difficult terrain many children would have to walk to reach a Grade 5 classroom prevents them from receiving the level of education they require to help lift their families and communities out of the cycle of poverty. A new beginning lies ahead for the community of Atsemba. With the support of contributions in time and labour from this dedicated community, imagine1day will construct a Grade 5-8 school, fully equipped with furniture for students and teachers. After working with the community of Atsemba in constructing their Grade 1-4 school, a new source of water, a latrine and more… imagine1day is excited to continue to build on the foundation of education that has been laid.

start date: January 2010 end date: December 2010
total budget: $58,318.60 (five latrines)
Latrines offer privacy and hygiene for children to go to the bathroom. For many families a private latrine is the key factor in sending their girls to school. The education of girls contributes to higher economic productivity, lower infant mortality and fertility rates, and the attainment of longer life expectancy for women. They say…when you educate a girl you educate her whole family. During 2010 our goal is to construct five latrines which will serve over two thousand children each year. As part of our program we will also work closely with the communities’ Women’s Associations and Gender Equity School Clubs to encourage dialogue about menstruation in an effort to curtail drop outs that this stage of life often causes. imagine1day is proud to partner with Lunapads in providing each community with 10 Pads4Girls kits which will facilitate this conversation.
