The Importance of Latrines

In rural Ethiopia, girls often drop out of school when they begin puberty and menstruation because parents are concerned for their daughters’ privacy and safety, especially given traditional taboos surrounding girls’ developing bodies. For growing girls, having access to separate latrines can mean the difference between being able to stay in school and having to stay home.

For the girls in five rural communities, these latrines will offer more than improved hygiene and health. They will open dialogue about their need to stay in school even as they grow into young women, and open the door to their chance to reach their full potential by continuing their education. Educate a girl, educate her family, and transform a nation.

Goals

  • Construct five latrines to improve the health and hygiene of over 2,000 children every year.
  • Work with local Women’s Associations and Gender Equity School Clubs to prevent girls from dropping out of school by encouraging dialogue about puberty and girls’ education.
  • Provide Pads4Girls kits to each community from project partner Lunapads in order to encourage dialogue about menstruation, puberty and education for girls.
