Abi Adi Grade 5-8 Primary School

"I am excited because next year when I will be in Grade 5, I will not have to travel a long distance to get to my school. I am lucky because now I can continue my education close to home." – Birhanu, Grade 4 Student

A Story from Abi Adi

The words "Abi Adi" in the local language mean big community. Folklore says that once upon a time, a group of travelers were passing through the area. They were tired, thirsty and hungry and asked one person if they could rest at their house. They were warmly welcomed and well taken care of. Since then, the people of Abi Adi have been known for their hospitality and generosity.

These are qualities this community takes to heart to this day.  Not so long ago, the residents of Abi Adi decided to build a Grade 1-4 School in their community. They rolled up their sleeves, opened their pocket books, petitioned the local government and began working with imagine1day to turn their vision into a reality.  Through contributions of cash and labour, the community helped imagine1day build a safe, new school for their young children.  We should have known they wouldn’t stop there.  Though pleased that their youngest children would be able to attend Grades 1-4 close to their homes, they weren’t confident that this investment would truly payoff until a Grade 5-8 school to accommodate the next cycle of primary education, was built in their community.  So, shortly after breaking ground on the Grade 1-4 school, the community came together again and made a commitment to work with imagine1day to achieve this goal.

Thank you to the Imagine Ethiopia 2011 team and all their supporters who have helped turn this dream of a bright future for the children of Abi Adi, into a real possibility.
