Atsemba Grade 1-4 Primary School

A Story from Atsemba
In rural villages like Atsemba, girls are often kept from school so that they can help with household chores. They leave school to marry at a young age, or are discouraged from attending when they begin puberty and menstruation because parents are concerned for their daughters’ privacy and safety as most schools have no access to private latrines.
In spite of old traditions, Ato Redae's 15 year old daughter has never missed a class, even though most of her education took place outside in an open-air school. With the construction of eight simple, separate boys and girls latrines on the grounds of Atsemba’s new school, parents are already more eager to support their daughters’ education.
Goals
- Replace Atemba’s open air 'dass' school with a four-classroom school for 400 grade 1 to 4 students.
- Build an eight-stall latrine with private facilities for boys and girls.
- Equip classes with furniture, textbooks, sports materials and science teaching aids.
- Train teachers in Science, Active Learning and Life Skills.
- Mobilize and train a local Parent Teacher Association that will lead the school now and into the future.
- Construct a water point to serve children’s consumption needs and micro-irrigation for income generation activities.
- Plant trees and a school garden to generate income and provide tools and ecology training.
