Hintalo Wejirat Sustainable Livelihood Project

Zafana carries water for her family twice before school, twice after school, 30 minutes each way. With a community water point, she’ll have more time to study.

A Story about Water for Hintalo Wejirat

In rural Ethiopia, the survival of every school and every community is dependent on the most basic of essentials: clean water and food. A community with the skills and training to manage food and water security and generate income is more likely to carry their educational initiatives into the future.

That’s why imagine1day is working with communities in Hintalo Wejirat to build water points, plant fruit trees and community gardens and train Parent Teacher Associations in leadership, financial management, project sustainability and income generation. The strongest foundation for the future of each school and every child’s education is a community fully empowered with the financial and human capacity to support itself when our work together ends.

Goals

  • Ensure that the communities that imagine1day works with have the financial and human capacity to support themselves when our work together ends.
  • Build 14 water points to ensure access to clean water.
  • Train 30 Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) that will lead the future of local schools.
  • Provide seed funding and training to develop income generation programs in 30 schools.
  • Plant 40,000 trees and provide hand tools to 30 schools.
  • Train 60 teachers to teach Life Skills including health, hygiene and agriculture.
