Tsabat Grade 5-8 Primary School

A mother should not have to choose between her daughter’s safety and her right to go to school. With a new Grade 5-8 school located in the heart of Tsabat, young girls will be treated as equals to their brothers with a right to continue their education beyond Grade 4.

A Story from Tsabat

On our first visit to Tsabat, when the community came together to present their proposal to enter into a partnership with imagine1day, we met a mother of three.  Her youngest daughter was entering the third grade, her middle son was happily attending Grade 5, and her eldest daughter was repeating Grade 4 for the third time.  When we asked this mother why her eldest daughter hadn’t progressed to the fifth grade, she explained that she feared for her daughter’s safety during the required 10km walk to reach the nearest Grade 5-8 school.  She felt her son could protect himself, but her daughters could be at risk of rape or injury.  Through our dialogue we learned of this mother’s deep commitment to her children’s education, which she was proving by allowing her eldest daughter to repeat the fourth grade rather than keeping her at home or forcing her into early childhood marriage.  With a new Grade 5-8 school in the heart of Tsabat, this mother is celebrating the possibility of all of her children, including her daughters, progressing to the fifth grade and eventually graduating from primary school, high school and higher levels of education.
